On turning 2

Dear Little Dude,

Happy birthday, baby boy! Today you are 2!

What a year this has been for you. You went from being a shy baby who never left my side to being a self-confident, funny little boy. It has been an absolute pleasure watching you grow this past year.

You have had some huge milestones- you learned to walk! In fact you took your first steps on your sisters third birthday- with a fork and a piece of corn in your hand! It was so exciting watching you take those first steps. Once you started going you haven’t stopped. Your daddy and I often joke that once you learned to run, you forgot how to walk.

You also started daycare at 13.5 months old. I was so nervous about how you would react to separating from me and being in a new environment. I remember thinking it would take weeks for you to adjust to your new routine, new people and new children and most of all being away from me. Daycare was the BEST thing we could have done for you. It took you all of 5 days to adjust. Once you felt comfortable there, you started shutting the door in our faces. Maybe some parents would be upset but your daddy and I were so happy for you! So happy that you love having friends of your own, teachers that you love and a place that you can call your own.

Your language development which was slow to develop has boomed over the past two weeks and you are putting up to 8 word sentences together! Your receptive language has always been exceptional but now being able to have a conversation with you about your day is just the icing on the cake! You love to tell us what you did at daycare and which friends you played with!

You also love sports. You love your tennis racquet and hockey sticks. You haven’t quite figured out how to use a baseball glove but you sure give a good ‘ol try! You went on the ice with daddy this winter and loved it! I have a feeling that we’ll be spending many weekends in a rink cheering you on while you play hockey!

You also love music. You and your sister both love All About the Bass by Meghan Trainor. You do the funniest dance when it comes on. You turn in circles until you get dizzy yet you could listen to this song over and over again. You love to play the guitar and the first time you picked one up you innately knew what to do and how to play it. It’s pretty impressive. I’m hoping you’ll learn to sing like John Mayer and write an album or like Luther Creek and perform in my favourite musical, RENT. No pressure though.

You and food. Wow. You are a total meat lover. Steak and burgers are your favourite although you won’t eat a burger in the bun. You eat the patty and the buns separately. You are a total fruititarian. Blueberries or blueblues as you call them, are your favourite and you often eat a pint yourself in one sitting. You love french fries and chips and probably could eat them all day if we let you. It’s hilarious to watch you eat ice cream. You will only eat it in a cone and it’s painful how long it takes you to eat it. You bring the ice cream to your lower lip, dab a bit of ice cream on it and then lick your lower lip. Then you want to wipe your face. Then you repeat.

Cars, trucks and trains are your newest obsession! You adore Hot Wheels cars and love to carry them around with you. You also sleep with all of your favourite toys in your bed including about 20 cars. You check before you fall asleep to make sure they are all there!  On Thursday when the garbage trucks come around you love watching them. You also love to sit on the front porch naming all the colours of the cars and buses driving by. You could sit there for hours and never get bored. You also love to read books and have some favourite such as Brown Bear, Brown Bear, H is for Hockey, Hockey Night in Canada, Happy Birthday book just to name a few.

You have a little bit of OCD. You like your things in a certain way, and you really like your routine. You insist on wearing one blue sock and one grey sock. We have tried to trick you numerous times but you don’t fall for it. The grey sock goes on the left foot and the blue on the right. You also love to clean! Your daddy and I always joke that we aren’t sure where you got that gene from because neither of us love to clean!

You and your sister have been the best medicine for me these past few months. You probably will never remember me being “sick” but your cuddles, kisses and head rubs mean more to me than you ever know. I love when you rub my hair and say “mamas hair gone. Uh oh. Its missing”. It is so sweet.

You and your sister continue to have a special bond starting from the day you were born. The two of you are each others best friends and it has been so nice to watch your relationship grow and flourish. You adore her and look up to her. You love playing together whether its arts and crafts, hockey, or cars. My hope is that you continue to adore each other, love each other and be each others best friend and support system.

Most of all, Little Dude, your have added so much joy, love and laughter into our lives. Thank you for being you. Ever since you were a baby you have had this killer, infectious smile. When you smile you can’t help but smile back and you light up a room! We can’t wait to see all of the amazing things this coming year has for you!

Love you to the moon and back.
