A few weeks ago, Princess Peach was off school for the first P.D. (Professional Development) Day of the school year. She had a great day planned with a play date at a friend’s house in the morning and then a play date at another friends house in the afternoon. In between her two play dates, I decided I would take her out for lunch. After all, being her chauffeur is exhausting! ha
When she woke up in the morning, I told her about her day and then said to her “You can pick where we have lunch today. Anywhere you want to go, we will go”.
“I want to go to Aroma”. She said.
“Of course”. I replied.
So in between play dates, we drove to an Aroma close by for our lunch date.
I wasn’t surprised that she chose Aroma. My kids are regulars at Aroma as we have eaten there with them for years.
It was a lovely day. Even though it’s officially fall, the day that we went for lunch was more like summer and we were able to enjoy our lunch on their amazing patio.
There is something special about watching my kids at Aroma. They walk in and know exactly what they want to eat. They usually decide what they want to eat on the way there and they often order it for themselves! Aroma has created a kids menu which includes three nutritious made-to-order choices. All three menu items come with a drink and a cookie. Kids can choose from a grilled cheese sandwich with cucumber sticks, french toast with fruit and pasta with red pepper and tomato sauce. The portions are large and filling.
Besides the food, the second most important reason why we keep returning to Aroma is the atmosphere. Dining with children is hard and I often don’t find it enjoyable. My kids can be loud, not want to sit and sometimes the food can take a really long time to come making our dining experience full of threats and stress! But at Aroma, it’s different. There are no servers to take your orders or bring your meals. You order at the cash and once you place your order and pay for it, you find your own table and you can sit for as long or as little as you want. When your meal is ready, your name is called. There is water in a jug that is self-served in small plastic cups. My kids can make noise, move around and act like their crazy selves without bothering anyone else because the atmosphere is laid back and casual.
I digress. Getting back to my lunch date with Princess Peach. She went up to the cash and ordered an Aroma Kidz grilled cheese sandwich and a hot chocolate. I got my favourite Shakshuka and a coffee and we sat outside and enjoyed a wonderful meal together. Sometimes Princess Peach isn’t a great eater and when we eat out at restaurants she won’t eat very much. I’ll usually get upset because it’s a waste of money and food but at Aroma it’s different. Why? Well it’s my mom trick! Those small complimentary chocolates you get with your drink, she wants to eat as soon as she see it, makes the BEST bribery tool! Both of my kids will sit and eat their food for the little chocolate. Sometimes, if they are extra good, they will go up to the bar to ask for an extra one and the staff are always so generous and throw a few extras our way.
After we ate our lunch, Princess Peach put her arm around me, kissed me on the cheek and thanked me for taking her to her favourite restaurant. Couldn’t get better than that!
