The little balloon that could

Have you ever let a balloon slip through your fingers and wonder where it was headed? Would it get stuck in a branch of a tree? Would you travel onwards and upwards and just pop? What would happen to that perfect round oval on a string when it was let go of?

Last week I was looking through an old picture box with my kids. They love looking at old pictures of me and Aunty Beige over years. Between a few pages I found an envelope. It looked weathered and was addressed to me at my elementary school. Funny for a 7-year-old to get mail at school right? Wrong! To kick off “Education Week” in 1989 (holy long time ago) my school did a balloon release. The balloon was found 6 months later and the lovely couple returned the balloon with a handwritten note.

Below is the hand written note from Raymond and Sylvia Buck, the couple who found my balloon.

They also included a map of where my balloon flew to, Toronto, Ontario to Ulysses, Pennsylvania.

Last but not least was my balloon with tag from school.

It was a very nice thing to stumble upon and I love that my mom saved it for me! I so appreciated finding this. Have you ever sent a balloon off and had it sent back to you? Or a message in a bottle?

I remember releasing balloons in elementary school too. Mine were never found. My sister’s were. Ironically in Pennsylvania too and we released them in Toronto! 🙂
