The calm before the storm -Birth Story part 3

Here is the third installment of my birth story! I hope you are enjoying it so far. For those just joining just here are part 1 and part 2.

When I entered the birthing suite I was surprised at how large it was. There wasn’t much in it besides the usual medical gear, a bed and hmm where is The Hubster going to sit? There was no where for him to sit! They were so busy that all the chairs were taken. Why they didn’t have one chair designated to each room baffles me. Crazy stuff. At this point he was so exhausted that our nice nurse brought him a sheet and a pillow to set up shop on the floor.

Our nurse introduced herself. She was lovely and was very calm. She asked me if I took a pre-natal class. I said yes I had but didn’t learn anything so I had no clue what I was doing. As I had been given pitocin they had to hook me up to lots of different types of monitors and I had a few IV lines attached to me. I was uncomfortable to say the least. All of the monitors on my stomach kept driving me insane. One of the only things I remember in my pre-natal class was the instructor talking about walking around while in labour. Here I was pretty much tied down to the bed. No walking around for me. So what the hell was I suppose to do?!

I thought I was a genius telling the nurse I had to go to the bathroom. I didn’t realize that it would literally take her 10 minutes for her to untie me, and then the same amount of time to reattach everything once I got back into the bed. I did this a few times and then just gave it. It was so annoying.

After a bit the nurse checked me and I was only at 1 cm. I was in pain and so uncomfortable with all the gear on my stomach. Let me preface this by saying epidurals freak me out. The thought of a HUGE needle going into my spine and knowing the risks is horrifying. During my pregnancy I was proud to tell people that I had no plans on getting an epidural. I even told my doctor at 8 months pregnant to write in my chart that I was not to have an epidural.

Well after being strapped down with all of these monitors on me and nowhere to go I asked the nurse how much worse it was going to get. She laughed and said that I had 9 more centimetres to go. I knew what I had to do. I blurted out “I want an epidural”. I think The Hubster was in shock when I said it but was probably happy to give me something to shut me up 🙂

Literally within four minutes two men arrived at my door and introduced themselves. They were from anesthesia and they were going to give me my epidural. I’ve never heard of them coming so fast but I wasn’t about to send them away. This was also good because I know couldn’t change my mind.

I got the epidural and felt amazing! I was just relaxing in our room and looking forward to meeting our baby.

Around 11 our nurse, prior to going on her break checked me and I had progressed to 3 centimetres.

A little while later her sub came into our room, introduced herself and asked me how I was feeling. I said I was feeling a lot of pressure. She looked at my chart and said that just a little while ago I was at 3 centimetres. She decided just to check me again and she said that within 1 hour I went from 3 cm to 9 cm. She told me to call our families because the baby would be here by 2 pm! I felt like a birthing superstar. Everything that was suppose to happen was happening and FAST!

Then the doctor came in and checked me. He was an older gentleman who while checking me discovered that Princess Peach was sunny-side up. She had flipped from being face down to face up and still head first and they don’t like to deliver babies like that. He told the nurse to get me to start pushing and that the had to go deliver twins and then another baby via c-section and would be back soon.

So the pushing began. It sucked. But the best part is that The Hubster decided that he needed a nap when I had to start pushing. Yup. Imagine me pretty much naked in a bed pushing our child out and him sleeping on the floor. What a picture!

Well things were about to change. Stay tuned 🙂

Are you kidding me. He took a nap while you were pushing. They would be needing to call a doctor to treat my husband if that was him. Mine wasn’t allowed to leave my side when I was in labour. I got to do all the work he can at least slap a smile on his face and stay right beside me. They got the easy job.

Nolie, I have a picture of him sleeping on the floor. Just have to find it. When I do I will post it. I felt bad for him because by the time I had to start pushing he had been awake for 36 hrs! Next time I would consider a doula to help me out 🙂

  2. My goodness. Where did you deliver? In all fairness, when I “went in to labour” (I was induced) there was hardly anyone there (thank you, winter baby). But I had my Mom, my brother (poor soul – he knew he would be and WANTED to be kicked out if anything started to happen) and my partner in the room with me, all seated in comfy chairs while I was having contractions.

Needles are my BIGGEST fear. But I wanted the epidural. And I got one pretty much as soon as it was offered to me. Because I didn’t have to see it, I was OK. 🙂

Can’t wait to read what happens next.

I know! Horrible, right? You would have thought that I was delivering in the middle of nowhere but it was Mt. Sinai.
You had lots of family support there! Was your brother ok? Or traumatized??
I had my parents and sister in and out of the room while I was happy before anything happened!
