Nut-free Maple Cinnamon Granola

granola2

I’ve had a nut allergy my whole life. I grew out of my peanut allergy at 26 but I’m still allergic to all other nuts. I’m also allergic to fish and seeds which can make eating certain foods difficult. Granola is one of those foods. Pre-packaged granola often has seeds and nuts in it for added protein and health benefits. By including those foods, it means people with allergies to nuts and seeds can’t eat it. It took me years and years to find a brand of granola that didn’t have any nuts or seeds in it. The only problem is that it is from Trader Joe’s in the States. Even though I bring back boxes with me, it doesn’t last for very long.

So how do I fix the problem? I make my own granola! The great thing about making granola yourself is that is it very inexpensive and you can tweak it so many ways that you’ll never get sick of it!

All four members of my family love maple syrup. My kids can’t eat waffles or pancakes without it.  In fact, The Hubster and I semi-considered semi-joked about using Maple as Princess Peach’s middle name. In the end we didn’t use it, but I still think it’s a cute name. Ok, so I digress. This granola is super easy to make. I make it plain and then each person in our family adds to it as they like. Princess Peach likes to add chocolate chips. I like to add a combination of fresh fruit, dried cranberries, diced dried apricots and raisins.

I also don’t subscribe to granola just being a breakfast food. I love it as a snack, as lunch with Greek yogurt and I’ve also used it as a topping for muffins. It’s super versatile.
