An Omega-3 supplement for vegetarians, vegans and those with fish allergies

I’ve been navigating allergies my entire life. Being allergic to all nuts, all fish and all seeds has been challenging to say the least. But I’ve grown up this way so for me, I know no different. I’ve become a pro at reading labels, asking questions about ingredients and advocating for myself in restaurants and coffee shops.

When I was younger, my parents would give me and my sister a vitamin shaped like characters from a popular cartoon show. I loved them because for me they tasted like candy. I’m not sure how old I was when I stopped taking those. When I was 10 years old, I became a vegetarian after choking on a hotdog at a birthday party. Long story short, after being vegetarian for 10 years with B12 levels that were almost non-existent, I walked into a fast food chain and ordered a turkey sub. That was the end of me being a vegetarian.

In between, I would take vitamins but I never stuck with a routine.

Fast forward to the fall of 2010 when I found out I was pregnant with Princess Peach. I started reading books and websites on maternal health and best practices while pregnant. What I learned is for anyone’s overall health Omega-3’s is an essential part of a diet. I remember having a conversation with my obstetrician about it too. She asked if I was taking prenatal vitamins, which I was, and then she asked me if I was taking an Omega-3 supplement. I mentioned that I couldn’t due to my allergy and she kind of shrugged it off. That was that. We never talked about it again.

I took it upon myself to head out to a few health food stores near where I lived. At the time, all that was available were Omega-3 supplements that were made from fish. As a person who is allergic to fish this was very problematic. How was I supposed to get what I needed for baby and me if I was allergic to the ingredients? Want to guess what I did? Nothing. A big fat nothing. I didn’t get any Omega-3 supplements with either of my pregnancies. So, I worried silently as I couldn’t eat flax or hemp either due to my seed allergy which are also sources of Omega-3.

I’ve recently found out about and tried NutraVege which is a plant-based Omega-3 and high in EPA and DHA. It is an ideal supplement for someone allergic to fish, vegetarians, and vegans as it is derived from sustainably sourced algae instead of fish. NutraVege comes in both a liquid and liquid-gel forms. The liquids come in great flavours such as Strawberry Orange, Cranberry Orange, and Grapefruit Tangerine. Personally, I love the cranberry orange and the capsules (which are a great way to get your Omega-3’s while traveling). Getting your Omega-3’s hasn’t been easier as you only need 1 teaspoon or 1 soft liquid-gel daily.

Before trying NutraVege the only thing I knew about Omega-3’s besides containing DHA and EPA was that people often had “fish burps” after taking an Omega-3 supplement which totally turned my stomach. Even writing this, I felt my stomach turn with the word “fish burp”. But, and a huge but, because NutraVege is derived from algal oil there is no gross aftertaste or “fish burps”. Because  NutraVege is a direct source of EPA and DHA there is no conversion like other sources of Omega-3’s. Flax and hemp seeds for example are a source of ALA which the body can only covert a portion (less than 5%) into EPA and DHA.
